Ideation

Our original sketch

Our original idea was an interactive LED music box that allows users to travel back in time and listen to the beats per minute of top songs of their chosen year through visual and audio elements such as flashing LED lights and a drum.

We pivoted from adding LED lights and kept the drum straightforward with a screen and servo.

Audience

This is marketed towards music lovers and would be placed in music centered spaces such as concert venues, the grammy’s museum, or at a recording studio sitting on a shelf

Dataset

The dataset we are using contains the beats per minute (BPM) of the #1 Billboard song for each year from 2015-2024.

Main Components

Potentiometer: People will rotate the potentiometer to select a year
Servo: The servo rotates the drumstick up and down to hit against the drum
LCD Display: It will display the year and its #1 Billboard song

Final Prototype

When you turn the dial, the screen shows the top song from a specific year (2015-2024), and a servo taps a drum to match the song’s beats per minute (BPM). This lets you see how music styles have changed over the years and actually feel the rhythm and the evolution of music through the years.
